Hello, everyone!
Today’s blog post is something a lot of you have been asking for. While I specialize in Brazilian lymphatic drainage, today I want to talk about something just as vital for your lymphatic health: the foods you eat. Your diet plays a significant role in keeping your lymphatic system healthy, and while I’m not a nutritionist, I can share some general guidelines that can help you support your lymphatic health.
Before we dive into more details, I want to emphasize that maintaining a healthy lymphatic system doesn’t mean you need to go on extreme diets or exhaust yourself at the gym. It’s about balance, nourishment, and making mindful choices that enhance your body’s natural functions.
Let’s keep it simple and start making changes that actually help.
Lymphatic System Recap
Your lymphatic system works like a cleanup system for your body. It helps remove extra fluid, toxins, and waste to keep you healthy. What you eat directly affects how well this system works.
A diet high in refined sugars, processed foods, and unhealthy fats can overload your lymphatic system. These foods can cause inflammation and make it harder for your system to clear out toxins. When your lymphatic system is overwhelmed or inflamed, it struggles to do its job, which can lead to issues like swelling, tiredness, and a weakened immune system.
On the other hand, eating a balanced diet with healthy, anti-inflammatory foods helps your lymphatic system run smoothly. By making better food choices, you support your body’s natural detox process and help keep your lymphatic system in good shape.
Here are a few tips I like to follow and recommend to my clients:
1. Avoid Inflammatory Foods (This Is the Most Important!)
The number one thing you can do to support your lymphatic system is to avoid foods that cause inflammation. Inflammatory foods like sugar, refined carbs, and processed foods are the main reasons why people feel bloated and swollen. These foods can cause your blood sugar to spike and lead to chronic inflammation, which puts extra stress on your lymphatic system.
Refined sugars and carbohydrates:
Foods like candy, sugary snacks, and white bread can cause a quick rise in blood sugar levels, leading to inflammation. Instead, consider swapping white bread for whole grain options like whole wheat bread. For snacks, fresh fruit such as apples or berries can be a great alternative to sugary treats. Opt for whole grains like brown rice or quinoa instead of refined options. Using natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup can also be a healthier choice.
Processed foods:
These often contain artificial additives, trans fats, and preservatives that can negatively impact your lymphatic system’s efficiency. Whenever possible, choose fresh foods that don’t have a long list of ingredients and don’t come in a box or bag.
Excessive caffeine and artificial sweeteners: Too much caffeine and artificial sweeteners can dehydrate your body and disrupt lymph flow. Try to limit yourself to one or two cups of coffee or tea per day. If you need a sweetener, consider natural options like stevia or monk fruit.
2. Try Intermittent Fasting
Another way to help your lymphatic system is by trying intermittent fasting. This means taking regular breaks from eating, which can help reduce inflammation by lowering your insulin levels. When your body isn’t busy digesting food, it can focus on cleaning out toxins, which is great for your lymphatic system.
Intermittent fasting isn’t for everyone, but it’s something that works well for me. I use it occasionally when I feel my body is sluggish. It’s a way to give my digestive system a break and help reduce inflammation. I like to fast for 16 hours now and then to give my body a chance to reset.
It’s important to note that while some people find it effective, others might not adapt well to it. If you’re curious, it’s worth giving it a try to see if it works for you, but listen to your body and choose what feels best for you.
3. Eat Anti-Inflammatory Foods

Adding anti-inflammatory foods to your diet can be a great way to help reduce inflammation and support your lymphatic system. These foods can help keep your body’s natural detox system running smoothly and feeling balanced. Here’s some of my favorites:
• Dark Leafy Greens: Spinach, kale, and collard greens are all fantastic options. They’re packed with vitamins and antioxidants that help reduce inflammation. You can add them to your smoothies for a nutritional boost, but my favorite is sautéing them with a bit of olive oil for a quick side dish.
• Cruciferous Vegetables: Vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts are known for their detoxifying benefits. Steaming these veggies can make them easier to digest while retaining their beneficial nutrients. Try steaming them with a sprinkle of turmeric and a dash of olive oil for added flavor, or you can also mix them into soups and stews.
• Berries: Blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries are rich in antioxidants that combat inflammation. They make a delicious and healthy snack on their own, or you can add them to yogurt, oatmeal, or smoothies for a tasty treat.
• Healthy Fats: Foods like avocados, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish (like salmon) are full of healthy fats that help lower inflammation. I like to sprinkle chia or flax seeds on my breakfast, and walnuts are one of my favorite snacks.
4. Boost Your Fiber Intake
Fiber is essential for digestive health because they help your body get rid of toxins. Increasing your fiber intake is a simple way to support your lymphatic system. Here’s how I like to do it:
• Whole Grains: Swap refined grains for whole grains like oats, quinoa, and brown rice. These are higher in fiber and nutrients. I like to start my day with a bowl of oats topped with fresh fruit, and I usually add quinoa to my salads and side dishes.
• Beans and Legumes: Lentils, chickpeas, and black beans are excellent sources of fiber. They’re great for adding bulk to your meals while supporting digestion. You can add them to soups, mix them into salads, or even use them to make a hearty hummus.
• Vegetables: Make sure to include a variety of vegetables in every meal. Vegetables like carrots, bell peppers, and zucchini are high in fiber and easy to prepare. You can roast a tray of mixed vegetables that make a delicious and nutritious side dish, and it’s so quick to make. I also like to keep baby carrots handy when I want to snack.
• Inulin-Rich Foods: Foods like bananas, garlic, onions, and asparagus are rich in inulin, which helps feed the good bacteria in your gut. Add bananas to your smoothies, roast asparagus for your side dishes, and the easiest one: use garlic and onions to flavor your meals.
5. Incorporate Detoxifying Foods
Certain foods are known for their natural detoxifying properties and can give your lymphatic system a helpful boost. These foods help your body efficiently eliminate toxins. Here’s a more detailed look at how you can incorporate them into your diet:
• Lemon: Lemon is a powerful detoxifier that supports your liver’s natural cleansing process. The vitamin C in lemons helps boost your immune system and helps in the removal of toxins from your body. Try adding fresh lemon juice to your water throughout the day to enhance your hydration. You can also use lemon in salad dressings or squeeze it over cooked vegetables for a refreshing touch.
• Ginger: Fresh ginger is well-known for its digestive benefits. It helps reduce bloating and supports healthy digestion, which is crucial for removing waste from your body. Incorporate ginger into your diet by adding it to teas, juices, or smoothies.
• Garlic: Garlic is a potent natural detoxifier that stimulates the production of white blood cells, which play a key role in fighting off toxins and infections. You can crush a garlic clove and mix it into salad dressings, add it to roasted vegetables, or use it as a seasoning for various dishes to benefit from its detoxifying properties.
• Beetroot: Beets are rich in essential nutrients like iron and vitamin C, which support liver function and help purify your blood. They also contain antioxidants that can aid in the removal of toxins. I have my beets by roasting them with a bit of olive oil, blending them into a refreshing juice, or adding raw beetroot to my salads.
6. Stay Hydrated
I know I always say this, but hydration is crucial for keeping your lymphatic system functioning well. Proper hydration helps ensure that your lymphatic fluid flows smoothly, helping in both drainage and detoxification.
• Start Your Day with Water: If you’ve been here for a while, you already know about my morning routine and how I like to start my day with a big glass of room temperature water. This helps kickstart my metabolism and hydrate my body first thing in the morning. This simple habit helps boost my energy levels and set a positive tone for the rest of the day.
• Infuse Your Water: If plain water feels too bland, you can make it more enjoyable by adding natural flavors. Infuse your water with slices of lemon, fresh ginger, cucumber, or mint. These additions not only make your water more flavorful but also give you extra detoxifying benefits. For example, lemon adds a touch of vitamin C, while ginger helps with digestion and reduces bloating.
• Enjoy Herbal Teas: Herbal teas can be a wonderful addition to your hydration routine. These teas provide natural detoxifying benefits, helping to soothe digestion, reduce bloating, and support the overall health of your lymphatic system. Over the years, I’ve carefully researched and developed a blend that combines the most effective ingredients to enhance these benefits even further. By incorporating powerful Brazilian ingredients like Guarana, Lemon Balm, Ginger, and Yerba Mate, my lymphatic cleanse tea helps with the proper function of our lymphatic system, cleansing impurities and reducing bloating. You can find my tea here. I’m also currently developing a nighttime lymphatic cleanse tea that will be available very soon, with properties to detox, unwind and relax.
