As both a lymphatic drainage expert and a mother, I’ve experienced firsthand how beneficial lymphatic drainage massage can be during the postpartum period. This special time, full of joy and new beginnings, can also present its own set of challenges.Â
From managing swelling to balancing hormones, lymphatic drainage has been crucial in my recovery and can offer the same relief for you!
Understanding Postpartum Swelling
After giving birth, I was surprised by how persistent the swelling was. Postpartum swelling, or edema, is quite common and can be caused by several factors:
- Pushing During Labor: The intense effort during labor can cause fluid to build up, especially in the lower body.
- IV Fluids: Fluids given during labor can add to swelling.
- Hormonal Changes: High levels of progesterone during pregnancy can lead to fluid retention.
- Sedentary Lifestyle: Moving less after delivery can slow fluid drainage.
- Residual Pregnancy Fluids: The body keeps extra fluids from pregnancy.
How Lymphatic Drainage Helps: This massage stimulates your lymphatic system, which helps remove excess fluids and waste from the body. The rhythmic strokes of the massage guide fluid from swollen tissues back into the bloodstream, where it can be processed and eliminated. This reduces puffiness and discomfort, speeding up recovery.
From my experience, this massage was essential in easing postpartum swelling and improving comfort, and it’s been equally effective for my clients.
Baby Blues & Postpartum Depression
Pregnancy and childbirth can leave you feeling both physically and emotionally drained. The transition into motherhood is beautiful but can also be overwhelming.
How Lymphatic Drainage Helps: Nearly 85% of new mothers experience postpartum blues, which includes mood swings, anxiety, and feelings of sadness. This response to hormonal changes and new responsibilities can be tough. For some mothers, these feelings might continue or worsen, leading to postpartum depression.
Lymphatic drainage massage helps by activating the parasympathetic nervous system, which calms the body and reduces stress. The rhythmic strokes lower your heart rate and blood pressure, helping you relax. The massage also boosts the production of endorphins, our body’s natural mood enhancers. Endorphins help reduce pain and lift your mood, while lower cortisol levels ease stress. This combination helps manage postpartum blues and supports a smoother transition to motherhood.
Enhancing Your Sleep
Sleep deprivation is a major challenge for new mothers. The constant demands of a newborn can leave you feeling exhausted.
How Lymphatic Drainage Helps: Regular massages help you relax and improve sleep quality by increasing delta brain waves, which are linked to deep, restorative sleep. The calming effects of the massage ease your mind and body, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep.
In my own experience, massages made a significant difference in how rested I felt, helping me manage the sleep disruptions of new motherhood. Better sleep supports recovery and emotional stability.
Breastfeeding Support
Breastfeeding is a crucial part of nurturing your baby, but it’s not without its challenges. Finding ways to make this experience as smooth and comfortable as possible is essential.
How Lymphatic Drainage Helps: This massage supports breastfeeding by improving blood flow to the chest area and reducing muscle tension. Better circulation enhances milk production and makes breastfeeding more comfortable. The massage also stimulates prolactin, a hormone crucial for milk production, and alleviates breastfeeding discomfort.
By easing tension and supporting milk flow, the massage makes breastfeeding smoother and more enjoyable for both you and your baby.
Revitalizing Your Skin: Reducing Cellulite and Varicose Veins
The changes your body goes through after childbirth affect your skin and veins, leaving you with new concerns like cellulite and varicose veins.
How Lymphatic Drainage Helps: The massage boosts circulation and promotes drainage, improving skin elasticity and reducing the appearance of cellulite. Better blood flow helps break down fat deposits and reduces swelling in veins, easing the discomfort of varicose veins.
This improved circulation supports your skin’s healing processes, reducing the risk of stretch marks and enhancing skin appearance.
Nourishing Cells: Enhancing Cellular Nutrition and Oxygenation
After giving birth, your body needs to recover and rejuvenate, making cellular nutrition and oxygenation even more important.
How Lymphatic Drainage Helps: Lymphatic drainage massage stimulates lymph fluid flow, carrying nutrients and oxygen to your cells while removing waste products. Enhanced lymphatic circulation ensures your cells get a steady supply of oxygen and nutrients, which supports healing and overall health.
This process also helps clear out waste, reducing inflammation and supporting recovery. Better cellular nutrition and oxygenation contribute to healthier skin, more energy, and a smoother recovery process.
Building Routine During the Postpartum Period – Simple Steps to Stability

Adjusting to life with a newborn can make each day feel repetitive and chaotic. Creating small, manageable routines can bring a sense of normalcy and control. Here are some easy daily routines that only take a few minutes but can significantly enhance your well-being:
Morning Routine:
- Sunlight Exposure: Start your day with natural sunlight. Stepping outside or sitting by a window helps regulate your internal clock by reducing melatonin and boosting serotonin. Sunlight also aids in vitamin D production, which balances hormones like insulin, cortisol, and thyroid hormones.
- Scraping Your Tongue: Remove the layer of toxins that builds up on your tongue overnight by using a tongue scraper. This step helps prevent re-ingesting toxins and sets you up for a fresh start.
- Drinking a Big Glass of Room Temperature Water: Hydrate first thing in the morning with a large glass of room temperature water. This kickstarts your metabolism, flushes out toxins, and prepares your stomach for the day.
- Drinking Herbal Teas: These teas support lymphatic health and detoxification, providing a nourishing start to your day. They’re a great coffee alternative, especially if you’re breastfeeding. My Lymphatic Cleanse Tea is safe and helpful during and after pregnancy. You can find my tea here.
Night Routine:
- Taking a Hot Shower: A hot shower before bed helps relax your muscles, dilate blood vessels, and improve both lymphatic and blood flow, preparing your body for restful sleep.
- Legs Up the Wall: Elevate your legs above heart level a few times a day using pillows or cushions. You can do this while you breastfeed. This helps gravity move excess fluid from your legs back toward your heart, reducing swelling and pressure, and relieving heaviness.
- Opting for Red Lights and Reducing Screen Time: Switch to red light bulbs, which don’t block melatonin production and signal to your body that it’s time to wind down. Minimize screen time before bed to avoid the stimulating effects of bright light.
- Mindful Wind Down: Engage in calming activities before bed, like reading, journaling, meditating, or gentle self-lymphatic techniques. This helps reduce stress and signals to your body that it’s time to relax.
- Drinking Nighttime Teas: Consider drinking calming herbal teas like chamomile, valerian root, and lavender. These teas contain natural compounds that promote relaxation and better sleep, making it easier to unwind and rest well.
Incorporating these routines into your daily life can bring much-needed stability and comfort during the postpartum period. By taking small steps each day, you can create a sense of control and improve your overall well-being as you navigate this new chapter of motherhood.
Taking care of yourself is essential for taking care of your baby. Prioritizing your health ensures a better start for both you and your little one.
